Although the primary effect on glucose metabolism is not exactly known, the diet regulation remains a basic principle in therapeutic means of diabetes mellitus.
Thirty obese diabetics were selected for study, who were newly-diagnosed or had been untreated for several years, having no other diseases which might affect carbohydrate metabolism except obesity.
Standard glucose tolerance tests were performed before and after weight reduction by diet regultion and adequate exercise.
The following results were obtained.
1. Among 30 patients who had kept diet regulation with adequate exercise done for the maximum period of 6 monthes. weight reduction could be achieved in 22 patients.
2. Out of these 22 patients whose body weight have reduced satisfactorily, the glucose tolerance tests become normal in 15 cases, improved in 4 cases, and not improved in the remaining 3 cases.
3. On the other hard, among 8 patients in whom weight reduction was failed in spite of diet regulation with apequate exercise, the glucose tolerance tests become improve in 3 cases, and not improved in 5 cases.
4. On the follow up studies done approximately 12 monthes later, 12 out of 17 patients who had initial therapeutic aid remained in their reduced body weight with nearly normal glucose tolerance.
5. In one patient who has failed to reduce body weight glucose tolerance appeared improved and remained so in the follow-up of 12 monthes.
